摘要
At the iron bentonite interface Fe-silicates were observed as corrosion products which are supposed to mainly result from destabilization of smectite possibly caused by increasing pH. The present paper aims to study the evolution of the pH at the iron-bentonite interface and attempts to explain reasons for the different results published so far. The pH of the pure iron-water mixtures varied from 10.8-11.0. The pH values of the iron-bentonite mixtures were lower suggesting that the clay buffered part of the alkalinity induced by the iron oxidation. Further research has to be conducted to investigate if this will lead to substantial smectite destabilization.
