Ultrafine alumina particles prepared by mechanochemical/thermal processing

Ultrafine alumina particles have been prepared by the mechanical milling and subsequent heat treatment of a mixture of AlCl3 and CaO. Heat treatment of the as-milled powder at temperatures above 350 degrees C and washing with water resulted in gamma-Al2O3 particles 10-20 nm in size. Single-phase alpha-Al2O3 was formed in the sample after heat treatment at 1250 degrees C. This study demonstrates a novel process for synthesizing nanoscale alumina particles.
