Application of breakdown potential distribution in corrosion comparisons of stainless steels

The distribution of breakdown potential (E(b)) on samples of stainless steel (SS) was determined in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions using a 100-channel system made specially for the experiment. Materials with known resistance to localized attack were investigated. Readability and susceptibility to error of the representation modes were compared. Representation of E(b) distribution on the graph of potential (E) us log (cumulative breakdown frequency [F]) was particularly informative about localized corrosion resistance. Resistance could be deduced in a manner similar to evaluation of resistance to uniform dissolution of unpassivated materials from anodic polarization curves. Comparisons using conventional E(b) determinations could lead to misleading conclusions, however.
