New Textile Water Repellent Based on Reaction of Toluene 2,4-diisocyanate with Stearyl Alcohol

摘要
A new water repellent, 2,4-distearyloxycarbonylamino toluene, was prepared in 99% yield by reaction of a 1:2 ratio of toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) and stearyl alcohol (SAI) at 100C for 90 min. The purified product had a melting point of 65C and was characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis, Optimal aqueous emulsification of the unpurified product was achieved. At different concentrations (20-50 g/L) of the emulsion in a padding bath, 50/50 cotton/polyester fabric acquired water repellency with a maximum rating of 70. The emulsion was used as an extender for a perfluoro finishing agent. Treated fabric lost water repellency after five washes. Addition of dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) to the finishing bath improved washing durability up to 10 washes, but water repellency was completely lost after 25 washes.
