A general description and current status of the Chandra X-ray Observatory

The third of NASA's four Great Observatories, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, was launched aboard the Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999. Here we describe the principal elements of the Observatory, summarize the mission status, and present selected science highlights.
