Lysozyme levels in human tears

Tears collected from 69 healthy subjects (138 eyes) with normal fluid fear secretion were analyzed hy our lysozyme plate method. The enzyme fifer was estimated as well, lysozyme levels in basal tear fluid ranged from 2400 to 10,000 mu g/mL of hen-egg-white lysozyme activity (HEL). In stimulated fear fluid, induced hy ammonia inhalation, the enzyme level fell dramatically and appeared to reach a minimum around 1195 mu g/mL HEL. lysozyme concentration in tears of healthy human subjects depends on the flow rate of fear secretion. Even when the lysozyme level was low in stimulated tears, if has a potential anti-inflammatory role.
