A nondimensional number to classify composite compressive failure

A new nondimensional number (eta) to predict the dominant failure mechanism of fiber reinforced composites under compression loading is presented. Results from previous experimental investigations on the failure of glass fiber reinforced and carbon fiber reinforced vinylester matrix composites, respectively, were used to motivate and develop eta. Experimental results available in the open literature are used to compare the predictions of eta. This number can be used as a design tool to develop new composite materials with a preferred failure mode. The exercise of developing such a number provides insight into parameters that control the compressive strength of fiber reinforced composite materials.
