Severe dengue and pregnancy: a review of data from the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, surveillance information system

Dis. 7(5), e2217 (2013). Dengue is the most common mosquito-borne infection. Owing to many factors (including urbanization and travel), dengue is now spreading in many settings in the world where it was not previously endemic. In most cases, dengue infections are asymptomatic or a mild form of the disease, while severe dengue cases are rarely reported. Few reports are available on dengue during pregnancy, and such infections can lead to miscarriage, preterm delivery, fetal death, low birth weight, neonatal admissions to the intensive care unit, fetal anomalies and maternal mortality.
