NITI Endoluminal Compression Anastomosis Ring (NITI CAR 27A®): A breakthrough in compression anastomoses?

BACKGROUND: Compression anastomoses have shown to be at least comparable to suturing and stapling techniques regarding safety and complication rates but up to now could not gain wide acceptance among surgeons. METHODS: Presentation of a new stapling technique. RESULTS: The NITI CAR 27(A (R)) device as a further development of compression anastomosis aims to eliminate the drawbacks of circular stapled anastomosis by combining the old concept of compression anastomosis with the use of superelastic materials. The handling of the device is very similar to staplers, which are in routine use today, but there are important differences and pitfalls we want to point out. CONCLUSIONS: The novel stapling device is a promising tool for anastomosis in colorectal surgery.
