Some notes on the classification of Fragilaria, Synedra and their sub-groups

In this paper I examine various classifications of the 'araphid' diatom genera Fragilaria and Synedra, including the sub-groups related to, or having been associated with both. I discuss the 'competing' classifications highlighting their similarities and differences and suggest which groups (genera and above) might be useful for any classification of the `araphid' diatoms in the future. I have attempted to address the issue of the nature of classification. I close with a discussion of possible avenues of progress and where it may come from.
