Ru(III) catalysis in the oxidation of chalcones by iodate. A kinetic study

The kinetics of oxidation of chalcones by iodate in the presence of Ru(III) as catalyst has been studied in aqueous acetic acid medium. The products of oxidation are benzoic acid and phenyl acetaldehyde. The reaction is first order with respect to [IO3-] and fractional order with respect both to [chalcone] and [Ru(III)]. The solvent and salt effects on rate suggest a dipole-dipole reaction. A mechanism involving formation of [Ru(III)-chalcone] complex which is oxidised to [Ru(V)-chalcone] by the oxidant in the slow step is proposed. Non-linearity of the Hammett's plot is attributed to the influence of substituents on two steps of the mechanism to different extent.
