The human brain is the most complex of organs that nature has yet provided. The formation of the human brain has been studied extensively, but the brain is only now yielding its genetic secrets. In this article the author reviews the formation of human brain and the disorders that result from disturbances in this development. Where possible, the genetic disruption believed to be responsible for the malformation are detailed, the developmental process that is disturbed is reviewed, the typical clinical features are described, and the genetic consequences to the child and family is discussed.
