Paper manufacture using beet pulp and factory waste lime

Sugar factories discharge large amounts of waste lime, consisting of ca 50% water and 33 to 40% calcium carbonate, which is a considerable environmental problem, However, calcium carbonate is the major component in paper apart from cellulose, and data presented here show that paper of high photocopying and food-packaging quality can be produced using waste lime, Paper produced using 10% sugar beet pulp together with cellulose from other sources and waste lime also gives good results, This process could, therefore, supply paper mills with a large proportion of their calcium carbonate requirement, utilise a significant amount of beet pulp, and greatly reduce waste lime discharges.
