The MEG experiment at PSI: status and prospects

摘要
The present status of the MEG experiment at PSI is reviewed. This experiment aims at measuring the branching ratio of the lepton flavor violating process mu(+) -> e(+)gamma with a sensitivity two orders of magnitude below the present experimental limit, set to 1.2 x 10(-11) by the MEGA experiment. The positron momentum will be measured by a set of drift chambers inside a nonhomogeneous magnetic field while the photon four-momentum will be measured by an innovative homogeneous liquid xenon scintillation calorimeter. The experiment is now in an advanced construction stage and it is scheduled to start engineering runs during the year 2006.
