Development of SMART layer for built-in structural diagnostics

摘要
A technique was developed to efficiently built-in a network of sensors onto composite structures for structural diagnostics. The technique uses printed circuit process to manufacture SMART Layers that host a network of distributed piezoceramics. The SMART Layers can be embedded inside composites and also parched on the surface of metallic structures. Mechanical tests have shown that the incorporation of SMART Layers onto structures does not weaken their structural integrity. The SMART Layers have also been demonstrated to be useful for identifying foreign impact, detecting structural damage, and monitoring composite cure.
