Magneto-optical trap of metastable helium-3 atoms

摘要
A magneto-optical trap of metastable He-3 atoms has been demonstrated. Some 10(5) atoms have been confined in a region with a diameter of approximate to 0.4 mm at a temperature of approximate to 0.5 mK; the atomic number density is estimated to be approximate to 10(9)/cm(3) at the trap center. These characteristics of the He-3 trap are almost comparable to those of the He-4 trap so far demonstrated by many workers. By monitoring the fluorescence from the trap, the trap loss rate has also been measured and discussed.
