The magnetic and magnetooptical properties of Y-substituted erbium iron garnet single crystals

摘要
The magnetic and magnetooptical (MO) properties of ErxY3-xFe5O12 (x = 0.4, 1.5, and 2.5) single crystals have been presented and compared to those of pure ErIG. Faraday rotation (FR) spectra obtained in energy region 5500-13 000 cm(-1) with a high optical resolution has been presented here, in contrast to other researches of the Faraday rotation performed at 1152 nm. The investigations have been provided at 5, 130, and 295 K temperatures under magnetic field up to 20 kOe applied parallel to the [111] crystallographic axis of the crystals. It was employed as an effective means of modifying the exchange interaction between the rare earth (RE) and the two Fe sublattices: diamagnetic (yttrium) ions substitution in the dodecahedral {c} sublattice. It was discovered that both magnetic and MO properties were greatly affected by yttrium substitution. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
