High-toughness Lu2O3-doped Si3N4 ceramics by seeding

摘要
Previous reports showed that Lu2O3-doped Si3N4 ceramics had excellent high-temperature strength, but relatively coarse microstructure and low toughness. This work studied the effects of two kinds of beta-Si3N4 seeds with similar small diameter and different aspect ratio on Lu2O3-doped Si3N4 ceramics. Results showed that the addition of seed with small diameter and low aspect ratio produced more bimodal and finer self reinforced microstructure with the elongated grains of small diameter, and thus led to more significant improvement in fracture toughness, compared to the ceramics without seed or with seed of similar diameter and high aspect ratio.
