More stickies deposits were formed as blends of deinked pulp(DIP) and mechanical pulp were used in newsprint mills, compared with the process in which only DIP or mechanical pulp was used. In order to understand the reason caused more deposition in blends of pulps, pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) was used as a model substance of the secondary stickies from DIP, and the effect of calcium ions on the efficiency of cationic polymers was discussed. The flocculation and adsorption of fibrils and stickies were studied. The results showed that the high concentration of calcium ions and sticky contaminants from deinked pulp and the anionic trash from BCTMP were responsible for the more stickies deposition in blends of pulps.
