Precipitation behaviors in high nitrogen austenitic steels

The formation sequences, identification, and crystallography of 2(nd) phases in Fe-22Cr-21Ni-6Mo-(0.3N) and Fe-18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.9N austenitic high nitrogen stainless steels (HNS) during isothermal aging at 900 degrees C were investigated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Whereas six kinds of 2(nd) phases (sigma and chi phase, M23C6 and M6C carbides, and Cr2N and AlN nitrides) were appeared sequentially with aging time in Fe-22Cr-21Ni-6Mo-0.3N alloy, only sigma phase and Cr2N nitride were formed in Fe-18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.9N alloy. The exact identification and crystallography of various 2(nd) phases in Fe-22Cr-21Ni-6Mo-0.3N alloy were confirmed from the careful analyses of SAD (selected area diffraction) patterns. The precipitation sequence of Cr2N in Fe-18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.9N alloy was found to be grain boundary, cellular and intragranular with aging time, and the real crystal structure of Cr2N was identified as trigonal (ordered hcp) rather than hcp.
