Effect of sulphur and phosphorus on yield and their uptake by Indian mustard (Brassica juncea)

A field experiment was conducted during the winter (rabi) season of 1990-91 and 1991-92 on acid Alfisol to study effect of 4 levels of sulphur (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg Siha) and 3 of phosphorus (0, 13.1 and 26.2 kg P/ha) on 'Varuna' Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czernj & Cosson]. A significant response of crop was observed up to its application cf 60 kg S/ha in seed and 30 kg Siha in straw yield, However, crop responded up to 26.2 kg P/ha for both. Maximum seed (21.5 q/ha) and straw (69.0 q/ha) yields were recorded from the treatment combination of P 26.2 + S 90 kg/ha. sulphur and phosphorus uptake by seed and straw, and seed + straw significantly increased up to 30 kg Siha and 26.2 kg P/ha. Both the nutrient elements synergistically interacted in boosting all he parameters under study. Maximum S and P uptake by seed and straw, and seed + straw was observed in combination of P 26.2 kg/ha + S 90 kg/ha.
