Treatment of fracture-dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint using the Suzuki external fixator

We describe a simple technique for fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint. Eight fingers with a fracture-dislocation were treated with a self-manufactured dynamic external fixator, allowing early mobilization. The fixator consists of pins and rubbers. The clinical and radiographic outcome was evaluated and recorded. A nearnormal function was obtained in four patients. The average total active motion was 82degrees. Radiographic reduction was maintained. This external fixator is an inexpensive and simple technique for these difficult fracture-dislocations. Early intervention (before two weeks post-trauma) is recommended.
