For construction of new embankments and maintenance of existing embankments a proper understanding of the site characteristics is essential. This paper presents a few frequently observed failure mechanisms and discusses typical requirements for a site characterization. Suggestions are given for a typical soil investigation and for presentation of lab data. The effect of heavy rainfall on the soil conditions is briefly discussed. Correlations for primary and secondary settlement parameters are verified. A Type A prediction of the IJkdijk embankment failure test is presented.
