Stabilization of polyamides .2. Reactions of antioxidants with peroxy radicals of 6-hexanelactam

The termination reactions in the oxidation of 6-hexanelactam were studied in the presence of antioxidants near 100 degrees C under conditions where oxygen diffusion does not control the oxidation. Phenols, secondary aromatic amines and also nitroxy radicals of piperidine derivatives used as antioxidants react in inhibition reactions with peroxy radicals of 6-hexanelactam. With the representatives of the given types of antioxidants, rate constants of these reactions and the limit concentrations required for breaking the kinetic chain in the lactam oxidation were determined and the oxidation products of lactam molecules were identified for the individual stages of oxidation. Under given conditions, one molecule of phenol, piperidine N-oxyl and secondary aromatic amine are able to break two, three and ten oxidation chains of 6-hexanelactam, respectively.
