摘要
The term amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is dating from 1941, when a pathological description, made 20 years before, received clinical significance and a name. It is a very rare obstetrical emergency with poor prognosis. Many studies have shown that the AFE is a misnomer, representing not a true embolism, but an anaphylactoid reaction associated with pregnancy, characterized by sudden cardiovascular collapse, hypoxia and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Along with pathophysiology, diagnosis and management, the authors also present the legal considerations of AFE.
