A fuzzy algorithm for ABR flow control in ATM networks

Available Bit Rate (ABR) service category has been defined for transport of error and loss sensitive data that can tolerate delays. The goal of ABR service category is to provide rapid access to the unused network bandwidth whenever available. Several ABR flow control mechanisms have been proposed in order to maximize the utilization of the network and at the same time keep the cell loss at a minimal level. This paper proposes a new approach to the ABR flow control problem using fuzzy logic. The rule base is designed using a heuristic approach as it would best resemble the human cognitive process. The algorithm is tested for link utilizations, cell loss, fairness in allocation and its robustness.
