Petroglossum undulatum Schneider (Rhodophyta, Phyllophoraceae) from Brazil

Petroglossum undulatum Schneider (Rhodophyta, Phyllophoraceae) is recorded for the first time outside the deep water of North and South Carolina. The apparently disjunct distribution of this species may be attributed to insufficient collections in the intermediate geographic areas and to the similarity of the external morphology of this species to that of two species of Cryptonemia, with which it grows in association. A detailed description of Brazilian material and comparison with a topotype of P. undulatum from North Carolina are given. Gametophytes were known from the type collections and tetrasporangial plants are described here for the first time.
