Surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease

Surgical therapy for gastroesophageal reflux disease has seen dramatic changes over the last decade. Among these are an enhanced understanding of the mechanisms that control the competency of the cardia, and a greater reliance on operations, due to the use of minimally invasive procedures. This article discusses the current role of surgical therapy for patients with GERD, with particular emphasis on the indications for surgery, the operations of choice, and the author's preferred techniques.
