Enhanced magnetic and structural properties of Ca doped BiFeO3 thin films

摘要
We report on preparation of Bi1-xCaxFeO3 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) thin films using a cost-effective and lower temperature sol-gel process. Structural, optical and magnetic properties are studied for the films annealed in vacuum in presence of magnetic field (500 Oe) at 300 degrees C for 60 min. X-ray diffraction results show rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure of BiFeO3 in un-doped and doped films. Structure is seen to be affected by the charge compensation mechanism (oxygen vacancies) caused by replacement of trivalent ion (Bi3+) with divalent anion (Ca2+). Smaller crystallite size (similar to 25.8 nm) with minimum stacking fault probability is observed for x = 0.2. Addition of Ca2+ forms localized states within the forbidden band thus leads to a decrease in direct band gap from 2.7 to 2.4 eV. Ferromagnetic behaviour is observed for all the calcium (Ca) doping concentrations in BiFeO3 thin films. High saturation magnetization (M-s) of similar to 130 emu/cm(3) is observed for the dopant concentration of 0.2.
