Design, fabrication and evaluation of a four-Josephson-junction superconducting quantum interference device with two superconducting loops

We developed a four-Josephson-junction superconducting quantum interference device (4JJ-SQUID) with a large modulated voltage to realize a highly sensitive magnetic sensor. This letter describes the design and fabrication, and discusses the potential and the performance of the 4JJ-SQUID. The 4JJ-SQUID was fabricated using Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb tunnel junctions. The SQUID consists of two pairs of Josephson junctions that form two superconducting loops via a shared washer coil. We confirmed using both calculation and experiment that the SQUID had a higher magnetic sensitivity than that of a conventional DC-SQUID.
