A simultaneous treatment for carburization and carburization prevention by hollow cathode discharge was carried out with methane and hydrogen mixing gas for preheating, carburization and diffusion treating in the same chamber simultaneously. The hardness, carbon distribution and microstructure of carburized chromium-molybdenum steel were investigated after the treatment of simultaneous plasma carburization and carburization prevention. It was found that the simultaneous treatment of carburization and carburization prevention depended on the methane content in the mixing gas, the flow rate of the mixing gas and the treating temperature. The experimental results indicate the possibilities for simultaneous treatment of plasma carburization and carburization prevention. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.
