Treatment of C6 glioma in rats by octreotide: a CT study

The ability of somatostatin analogues to explain an antitumor respons on the s.c.implanted tumors to nude mice was described. We investigated the effect of Octreotide on the growth of the intracerebral gliomas in Wistar rats. We stereotactically inoculated a 3 groups of 10 male Wistar rats with 5 x 10(6) CG glioma cells. After 30 days of tumor growth, first and second group was treated s.c.with Octreotide (10 or 30 ug/animal/twice daily/for 3 weeks). In all rats computer tomography was performed 24 hours before and after treatment. Computer tomographic scans showed that in both experimental groups there was a 50% reduction in tumor volume and 80% in cerebral edema compared to control animals. Our results suggest a new therapy for some brain rumors such as malignant gliomas, based on the long acting somatostatin analogue.
