Influence of cyclodextrin and its glucose units on polymerization of styrene

摘要
The free radical polymerization of styrene in water in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) without using surfactants is described. The effect of beta-CD which greatly accelerated the polymerization, was wholly contributed to the formation of host-guest complexes with hydrophobic monomer to increase the monomer solubility in water. Through adding toluene that is similar in structure to monomer styrene to block the formation of beta-CD with styrene monomer, we found that just like free glucose, the glucose units of beta-CD could also accelerate the polymerization. The polymer particles with narrow particle-size distribution and clear surface were prepared without using any surfactants and solvent mixtures. (C) 2004 Society of Chemical Industry.
