Proton Conducting IT-SOFC Utilizing Internally Steam Reformed Alcohol Fuels

Cobalt doping on to the B-site of barium cerate zirconate proton conducting oxides is an effective route to lowering required sinter temperatures while maintaining reasonable proton conductivity. BaCe0.48Zr0.4Yb0.1Co0.02O3-delta was found to be stable under SOFC conditions and was thus utilized as the electrolyte in anode supported SOFC. A dual layer tape casting process that enables flexible anode and cathode composition was used to fabricate the cells. These were operated with humidified hydrogen and internally reformed methanol fuel. I-V curves and impedance spectroscopy indicate that further optimization of the electrode composition and structure is required.
