Shear textures in the stir zone of a near-a-titanium friction stir weld were examined by electron backscatter diffraction. The texture matches that of a D(2)((1) over bar(1) over bar2)[111] bcc simple shear texture that was transformed to hcp according to the Burgers orientation relationship, ;which aligns {101}(bcc) with {0001}(hcp), although there is also evidence of a P(1) hcp shear texture component. Deformation therefore occurred predominantly above the beta transus, and the alpha texture was inherited from a simple shear texture of the beta phase.
