Mathematical modeling of aerodynamics and heat and mass transfer in the absorption zone of a sulfur dioxide spray scrubber

A physico-chemical model is proposed for the absorption of sulfur dioxide by droplets of a limestone-gypsum slurry nozzle-sprayed in the absorption zone of a wet scrubber. Taking as a basis the Lagrangian approach to the dynamics of a polydisperse droplet system, a mathematical model is developed for calculating the coalescence, breakup, heating, vaporization, and changes in concentration of sulfur dioxide in the bulk of droplets in a nonisothermal, variable-composition flue gas stream. The parameters calculated for the absorption zone of a sulfur dioxide spray scrubber operating at a 300-MW power generating unit are presented.
