We present a temperature-dependent high-field magnetization study of the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (AFHC) Cu(C6H5COO)(2) (.) 3H(2)O along the magnetically characteristic axis a". The data are analyzed on basis of the Bethe ansatz equations and via exact diagonalization of a linear spin chain with 20 sites. Overall, we find a very good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations, and extract a magnetic coupling strength J/k(B) along the chain of 18.8(l) K. We discuss our results in context with the possibility for a magnetocaloric effect during the magnetization process of S = 1/2 AFHC systems. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
