Aviation travel results in high levels of greenhouse gases being released into the environment. Pollution from high-flying jets is up to four times as damaging to the environment as the same amount released from the ground. The air industry argue that modern jet aircraft are becoming more and more energy efficient, engineers are seeking alternative greener fuel sources, looking at the role of laminar flow in energy consumption and are looking at new designs for aircraft.
