Synthesis and characterization of halogen-free antiflammable polyphosphonates containing 4,4′-bishydroxydeoxybenzoin

The synthesis and characterization of halogen-free antiflammable polyphosphonates containing 4, 4′-Bishydroxydeoxybenzoin (BHDB) with good solubility and processability was demonstrated. The novel polymers prepared are the polycondensation products of phenylphosphonic dichloride (PPDC) and BHDB which exhibit excellent thermal stability. The polyphosphonate was purified by precipitation into hexane and isolated as a white solid and exhibit excellent solubility at room temperature in many solvents. The novel polyphosphonates combine the highly desirable property of flame resistance with good solution processability over a range of molecular weights. The results show that BHDB reduces the heat release capacity values of polyphosphonates, and PPDC is an ideal comonomer for lending solubility to the BHDB-containing materials.
