The Role of Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load of Carbohydrates in Acne vulgaris

Purpose The presentation of the current state of research on the relationship between acne vulgaris and both the glycemic index and the glycemic load aims to define the value of a low glycemic index and glycemic load diet for the prevention and treatment of acne vulgaris. Methods A selective literature search was conducted on acne vulgaris related to glycemic index and glycemic load in the PubMed database. Results There was evidence for the link between acne vulgaris and a high glycemic index and glycemic load diet, however, reliable data on the impact of a dietary change on the clinical severity of acne vulgaris are still needed. Conclusion Further data is necessary in order to establish a low glycemic index and glycemic load diet as a preventive or treatment option for acne vulgaris. However, the possible potential of a change in diet for acne vulgaris should not be ignored in practice at the present time.
