Modification of some Egyptian glauconites for industrial applications

Glauconitic material of El Gideda, Egypt was evaluated in terms of mineralogical, chemical composition, and crystal morphology as bleaching clay in refining of vegetable oils after acid activation using HCl and H2SO4 for different contact times. Structural modification of glauconite was investigated during acid treatment by means of X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The decolorizing of mixture of sunflower and cottonseed oils was tested. The results revealed that the products of acid activation could be used as bleaching clays. The bleaching capacity of glauconite samples started from 37% for untreated sample up to 89-92% after activation for 2hr. for all the acid courses. 4M hydrochloric acid seems to be the best activator of glauconite.
