Coral communities and reefs from Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) on the northern part of Costa Pica, has coral communities and reefs even though it is located in an upwelling area. Eleven coral species have been found. Pavona gigantea form coral reefs that are different to reefs found elsewhere in the eastern Pacific. A small patch reef constructed by Pocillopora eydouxi is also unique. One of the largest Pocillopora reefs in Costa Plea is located at the Isles Murcielago Archipelago. The marine environments of ACG are interesting and valuable, but very little studied as compared to the terrestrial environments.
