"Nature" in Chaucer's The Book of the Duchesse

摘要
The theological thought and ideal life in The Book of the Duchesse, Chaucer's first important poetry, had been kept on in Chaucer's other works afterward. The word "nature" in this poem firstly pointed to the god of nature which created everything on earth. This god protected and instructed man the right way of existence by means of harmonious natural law, gave human beings the ability of love so they can have noble character and achieve a happy life by the inspiriation of love, and solaced the suffering and loss of man in a humanistic and realistic way. So this elegy admired the goodness of humanity and the happiness of the earth.
