Solid solution of (Nd-x, Sm1-x)AlO3 was synthesized by a solid state reaction and the structural change caused by the substitution of Nd for Sm was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction at room temperature. Phase transitions from orthorhombic to trigonal forms were also observed by the use of a high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and a differential scanning calorimetry. The phase transition temperatures T-c are linearly related to the amount of the substitution of Nd for Sm. Thus, T-c and the structural characteristics such as lattice distortion are controllable by an appropriate amount of substitution of Nd for Sm. It is concluded that the phase transitions belong to a first-order transition from the structural relationship between low and high temperature forms.
