Two-dimensional analysis of crack formation around aggregates in high-shrinkage cement paste

A hybrid model has been used in an investigation of the fracture behavior of high-shrinkage cement paste restrained by a single aggregate. The effect of restraint on eigenstresses in an aggregate has been determined experimentally with the use of a newly developed stress sensor. Measured eigenstresses are used as input in a linear elastic fracture mechanical analysis modeling the upper and lower bounds for time of crack growth in high-shrinkage cement paste. Results from calculations based on these models are compared with results from tests carried out on the growth of cracks in high-shrinkage cement paste in a two-dimensional model.
