Large softening of acoustic phonons in PrOs4Sb12

摘要：

Inelastic neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction experiments were carried out to study the dynamics of the crystal lattice of PrOs4Sb12, in which the rattling motion of Pr ions has been inferred. A transverse acoustic phonon propagating along the cubic [011] axis exhibits large softening by about 30% from 300 to 10 K. Temperature dependence of the phonon intensity is quite close to that based on the Debye-Waller factor for the Pr ions. This fact indicates that the mode with the characteristic softening is dominated by the Pr-ion vibration. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
