This article reviews the anatomy of the carpal tunnel and surrounding structures. Topics include a general description of the contents of the carpal tunnel, topographical landmarks, the transverse carpal ligament, the median nerve and its branches, and the relationship of endoscopic devices to structures within and adjacent to the carpal canal. Its clinical application to endoscopic and open carpal tunnel surgery is stressed in order to prevent potential complications during surgery.
