Migraine prophylaxis with topiramate

Topiramate is approved in Germany for the prophylaxis of migraine. Patients with frequent migraine attacks do need prophylactic treatment. Migraine prophylaxis with topiramate has been shown to be effective in three placebo-controlled, randomized trials for preventive migraine therapy. Effective doses range between 15 and 100 mg per day, doses above 100 mg lead to more side effects. Adverse events include paresthesia, loss of appetite, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety and difficulties finding words. Topiramate might be also effective in the treatment of chronic migraine with or without medication overuse.
