The photodegradation of the complexes of poly(ethylene oxide) with copper(II) chloride in acetonitrile solutions was studied using UV-Vis, FT-IR spectroscopy and viscosity measurements. PEO-CuCl2 complexes decompose much faster than pure PEG, which was revealed by a great decrease of molecular weight of PEO and a large amount of oxidized products. The mechanism of photooxidative degradation of investigated complexes is discussed.
