Self-organized criticality of computer network traffic

摘要
Based on wavelet analysis, by measuring burstiness of network traffic and analyzing its statistical properties, we provide an empirical evidence for connections between self-organized criticality and network traffic, that is, avalanche, duration time and inter-event time of traffic flow fluctuation obey power law, which indicates that self-organized criticality maybe is the origin of fluctuation burstiness. The fact that inter-event time obeys power law confirms further that network traffic exhibits longterm memory and that the current model based on Poisson process has clearly lost its validity.
